What Causes of IBS?

Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most common gastrointestinal conditions in Australia, affecting 20% of the population. The exact causes of IBS is still unknown but some of the triggers include:

  • Food intolerances
  • Low fibre diet
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Infection e.g. following an episode of gastroenteritis

How is IBS diagnosed?

IBS is diagnosed by your doctor based on reported symptoms using the ROME criteria. If you are experiencing any of the IBS symptoms described above on a regular basis, it is important that you speak to your doctor. Do not ignore these symptoms and most importantly, do not self-diagnose as it could be something more serious.

The symptoms of some other gastrointestinal disorders can be very similar to IBS. Your GP will ask you a range of questions to identify ‘red flags’ and rule out other medical conditions such as bowel cancer, Coeliac disease, Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis, endometriosis or ovarian cancer.

How Can IBS be managed?

IBS is a long-term condition and there is no cure for it. Fortunately, research has shown that IBS can be successfully managed through dietary and lifestyle modifications. Dietary interventions implemented and supervised by a dietitian can help you to minimise IBS symptoms and prevent flare ups. Dietary modifications may include a low FODMAP Diet or simply manipulating the types of fibre and fluid in your diet; we will work with you to determine which intervention is right for you.

What is the Low FODMAP Diet Plan?

Research has shown that the low FODMAP diet plan can improve symptom control in up to 75% of IBS sufferers. FODMAP is an acronym that stands for Fermentable Oligosacchardies Disaccarides Monosaccharides, and Polyols. FODMAP is a group of short-chain carbohydrates naturally found in food or added to food.

For some individuals, these carbohydrates are poorly absorbed in the small intestines, drawing water into the gut, resulting in diarrhoea. These poorly absorbed carbohydrate sugars travel to the large intestines where they are fermented by the gut bacteria that lives in there, producing gas such as methane and hydrogen. This process of fermentation can lead to bloating, abdominal discomfort and tummy cramps. The gases produced can also affect intestinal motility, thus causing constipation.

Tolerance of FODMAPs varies between individuals. For this reason, it is important that you see an experienced dietitian trained in the low FODMAP diet to help you identify your triggers.

Our evidence-based Signature FODMAP Focus Program is specifically developed by our gut-health dietitian, Charlyn Ooi, to help you restore your gut so that you start to feel better in less than 2 weeks (in fact, most of our patients feel between within a week!).

We will guide you through each phase of the low FODMAP diet and provide comprehensive support to help you feel better in no time. No questions will be left unanswered.

Initial consultation

At your initial consultation, we will take the time to understand your health concerns and discuss if the low FODMAP diet is suitable for you. Using a holistic approach, we will also discuss other aspects to consider in your treatment plan.

Elimination Phase

The Elimination Phase is an important step of the FODMAP Focus Program and it goes for about 4 weeks. You should expect your symptoms to significantly reduce during this phase.

reintroduction Phase

This is often the most confusing and challenging phase for the majority of people navigating the low FODMAP diet on their own. We understand the challenges you face so we have designed a clearly defined, easy to implement FODMAP challenge protocol that will enable you to identify your trigger foods over 9 – 11 weeks. We will provide close guidance and support to help you undertake the challenges successfully.

Customisation Phase

After completing the FODMAP challenges, our dietitian will help you to put the pieces of the puzzle together and customise a dietary management plan that takes into consideration your individual intolerances and nutrition needs. You will learn practical tips on managing your IBS long-term.

We understand that our program package may not be suitable for everyone. At SDC, we do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach and your dietitian will discuss if the program is suitable for you at your initial consult. You also have the option of paying for consultations individually if you do not wish to proceed with the package.

She has more than 10 years of clinical experience as a dietitian and is highly skilled in working with clients across all stages of the lifespan. Case Study

Megan is a 42 year old female who has been suffering from IBS for about 8 years. She was referred by her GP with worsening symptoms over the last 6 months since she started a new job as a corporate lawyer within a high stress environment. She suffered from diarrhoea, bloating and tummy cramps almost daily. This was impacting on her job performance and she was sick of feeling lousy. Megan complained of brain fog and felt sluggish all the time.

How we helped Megan: 

Megan started to feel better within 5 days after starting on our FODMAP Focus Program. After being on the low FODMAP diet for 4 weeks, we guided her through the FODMAP challenge protocol using a systematic approach. Over the next 9 weeks, we identified that lactose and fructans (garlic, onion, bread and pasta) were major triggers for her IBS symptoms. Together with Megan, we designed a modified low FODMAP diet that incorporated foods she could tolerate. We met with Megan for her follow up 3 months later and she was managing really well on the dietary plan and her bowel habits returned to normal. She reported an increased energy level, better mood and was able to focus better at work.
